Can Anchoring Your Roof Reduce Home Insurance Claims?

front of houseThe roof of your home is one of the most exposed areas of the property. Sun, storms, rain and normal wear and tear really impact the overall quality of your roof. In some situations, this can lead to a significant amount of damage to your property. If damage does occur, your home insurance may provide you with the support you need to make repairs, depending on what happened, why it happened and what the damage is. However, it is always best to take steps to reduce the risk of home insurance claims instead.

There are various steps you can take to improve the overall condition and strength of your roof. First, start with a roof inspection from a licensed contractor. Talk about the condition of your roof and areas of concern. If there is significant damage or the need for repairs or replacements, get that taken care of first. It's always best to ensure your roof is not leaking, isn't missing shingles and is strong overall.

Then consider taking it one step further. Anchoring your roof could help. This process of adding weight and specially designed anchoring systems to your roof can help to reduce the risk of damage. The goal here is to provide extra assurance that your roof will not blow off.

In addition to this, you'll want to consider steps such as properly sealing the roof, adding gabled ends that add more strength and wind resistance and adding a higher quality of shingle that is more resistant to damage. You will need to look at the risk factors for your home such as wind, hurricanes and water and determine the best ways to minimize the risks associated with those areas of concern.

If there is sudden or accidental damage to your home's roof, your home insurance is likely to help you by covering the cost. However, it is always best to take steps not to reduce those risks. In the long term, reinforcing your roof, retrofitting an older home to make it more durable and upgrading construction elements can save you money on lower insurance.
