Can I Include Someone Not Living in My Home on My Auto Insurance Policy?

Girl adjusting rear view mirrorWho should be on your auto insurance policy? It can seem like a difficult question, especially when multiple drivers live in a home.

Your car insurance provides coverage for those people named on the policy specifically. It can cover some others as well. Before you allow someone else to drive your car, find out if he or she has coverage in your plan.

Who Lives with You?

You should generally list drivers in your home on your auto insurance policy. This is common practice since those individuals are most likely to drive the vehicle.

However, if one of those drivers has a poor driving record, the insurance company may exclude the driver. This means that driver is not to operate your vehicle and, if he or she does, they will not have coverage. That means you will not have coverage either for any damage to the car.

Perhaps you have a son or daughter moving off at college. If that child is taking his or her vehicle, it is generally acceptable to keep the student on your insurance. This is acceptable because their permanent residence is likely still your home.

What about a child or someone else that does not live in the same home? Generally, insurance companies will not allow a person not living in the home to be on the same policy. If that person operates your vehicle frequently, talk to your insurer. You may be able to add them to your policy. It may not be as inexpensive as a bundled plan, but it will still be possible for this individual to be a part of your plan. If you are allowing someone to borrow your car for a few days, he or she has coverage in most cases under a standard plan.

Anyone operating the vehicle regularly should be on your insurance plan. Doing so helps to ensure the vehicle is has protection in case of an accident.

Keep in mind that all drivers should have their own insurance even if they do not own a car. Having your own policy helps to make sure you have coverage. A single accident can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of loss, making this coverage essential.
