Yacht insurance is specialized to provide the maximum amount of insurance protection possible for boat owners. Yet, many people fail to take a closer look at their policy, what it offers and what it does not in order to ensure their investment is well protected from the many risks you face. Before you take your yacht out for your next adventure, party or sail, take a bit of a closer look at the valuables you have on board. Does your boat insurance provide enough coverage to keep those items protected?
The Risks are Present
Yacht insurance needs to provide a high enough level of financial coverage to protect the owner from all types of risks faced. Theft, vandalism and damage from storms are all common risks for today’s boats. Yet, it is not always the boat itself that is damaged. In many cases, the onboard electronics and valuables there also become costly losses in these events. If you do not plan ahead, though, you may find that your insurance does not offer enough protection for these items.
Estimate the Value
The first step for yacht owners is to estimate the value of their contents. This should include any items on board that add value to the boat, such as:
- Entertainment equipment
- Furnishings that are higher in value than average
- Valuables stored on board
- Art work
- Specialized products or custom-made finishes
Your yacht is your second home and your favorite location. You may have put a great deal into that yacht to make it personalized to fit your unique needs. If you do not have contents insurance that is valued at a high enough level, though, you may be putting those items at risk. Instead, consider a rider, which is a type of add on policy to your existing yacht insurance that boosts the value of what’s covered on board. Items that have a very high value individually should be named on these policies. All other items should be included in an inventory that can be used later if a claim is necessary.
Boat insurance is valuable and it can be financially essential if a significant claim occurs. With the right level of content insurance and coverage limits, you do not have to worry about those expensive and highly valuable items you are bringing on board.
